Thinking about joining?
While anyone may join Hang Glide Texas, a current USHPA membership with a minimum rating of H-2 and an AeroTow special skill sign-off are required to fly with us. If you do not yet meet these requirements, see our Links page for local instruction opportunities.
Joining the club requires each member to pay
a) A $600 capital share. The separate capital account is for the purchase of new equipment. Maintenance of existing equipment is paid for by tow fees or annual dues. The capital share is fully refundable if you want to leave the club, but you may have to wait for it to be refunded if funds are not readily available. To leave, you must notify the club in writing (email is acceptable).
b) Annual dues (pro-rated), currently $80. If you do not ask to leave and do not pay annual dues, your annual dues will be drawn against your share until the share is exhausted or you pay the back-dues. The annual dues pay for all fixed costs incurred independent of towing activity (including the hangar lot lease, trike insurance, and utilities).
c) Tow fees, currently $20 per tow. These fees cover all other expenses - tug maintenance, wear and tear, hangar maintenance, etc. Tows are nominally to 2,000 feet but typically 'to lift' and can be higher. We are a club and there is some flexibility here. Tow fees are paid in advance - you put down $40, $100, whatever you want, and the fee for each tow you receive is deducted from this amount. This avoids the tug pilots having to handle money. The Treasurer publishes everyone's account status after each weekend's flying.
Communication between members takes place through a private Internet forum. You'll be added to the forum once your application and payment are received.
We strive to be 100% open and transparent amongst the membership. In contrast to a commercial flight park, we are a "club of equals" in which no-one is paid and everyone is expected to help out in some way. All members have the same rights and the same general responsibilities.
Ready to join? Have some questions first? Let us know and we'll send additional information.
