Welcome to Hang Glide Texas
Here in the flatlands of Texas, hang gliding is made possible through towing. And while there are many ways to tow a hang glider into the air, pilots generally agree that aerotowing - the practice of towing behind a powered aircraft - is unequaled.
Hang Glide Texas is one of the only member-owned hang glider aerotow operations in existence. Since 2001, the club has enabled pilots across the southern portion of the state to experience the joy of being towed to any altitude in any direction and dropped in thermals, dramatically increasing the odds of a long flight relative to other forms of towing.
HGT operates out of Robert R Wells Junior Airport in Columbus, TX. It owns a hanger on-site, allowing its Rotax 582-equipped tow trike to remain permanently assembled and providing convenient storage for members' derigged gliders. Other member-owned assets include a customized Cushman utility vehicle and multiple launch dollies.
Thanks to its centralized location, pilots from Houston, Austin, and San Antonio can typically reach Columbus within one or two hours. The site is known for abundant but smooth lift in the summer months, with a current record distance flight of 186 miles. And while the lift may be weaker in the winter, mild temperatures allow year-round flying.
